We see forks a lot -at a restaurants, at home, the canteen in school etc...
But have you ever wondered how it got there how did it come to be? Well I certainly did ,so I researched it, found out and would love to tell you! The word "fork" comes from the Latin word "Furka" which means Pitchfork.
EARLY FORKS.
Bone forks were found in archaeological sites of the Bronze Age(2400-1900 BC).In Ancient Egypt big forks were used for cooking. In the Roman Empire bronze and silver forks were used.
ORIGINS OF THE FORK
It is thought to have originated in ancient Greece but the personal table fork was most likely invented in the Eastern Roman Empire, There they were commonly used by the 4th century.
FORK MANIA!
In the 9th century in some elite groups in Persia a similar utensil known as "Barjyn".But it was not used frequently . In the 10th century the table fork was commonly used in the Middle East. By the 11th century the table fork had become in extensive use in the Italian Peninsula. As Pasta started to become a big part of Italian diet the fork's popularity increased. Its popularity started to spread across Europe . But only in the 18th century did the fork become widely used in Britain.
TODAY
Today there are a variety of forks for a variety of different things to eat such as an ice cream fork for ice cream and fish fork for fish
So now you know all about forks and how they came to be so next time you see a fork or pick one up don't forget to identify it and it's story.
